Irrigation and Seeding After a Hardscape Project
What typically needs attention once construction wraps up, and realistic expectations for new turf.
Awaiting reviewer confirmation
Construction disturbs the soil and lawn around a project footprint, and existing irrigation coverage often needs to be adjusted or extended once the new layout is in place.
Timing matters for seeding. Cool-season grasses common in the Richmond area generally establish best in early fall, with spring as a secondary window — summer seeding is a harder path regardless of method.
No seeding method — broadcast seed, slit-seeding, or hydroseeding — can guarantee germination, because weather, watering consistency, and site conditions after installation all affect the outcome. A contractor should explain preparation and aftercare honestly rather than promise a result they cannot control.
Aftercare is not optional. New turf typically needs consistent watering and limited foot traffic during establishment — ask specifically what is expected of you during that window before the project starts.
